I read this to jog memory of having read it when I was an undergrad. It is sternly factual but enlightening about the times Johnson lived in. For one tiny example, I was surprised at the number of rural highlanders who went barefoot, even in the coldest weather. I shall move on to reminding myself about Boswell, who is entertaining in a different way.
