The Gardener only ever killed girls for three reasons. First, they were too old. Secondly, due to any health concerns; too sick, too injured or pregnant.Third, if a girl was incapable of settling into the garden. His son, Avery kills them for fun, and sometimes on accident. Whenever that happened, his father would ban him from the garden for a time, but then he'd be back.

They call him the Gardener, their captive, who collects young girls, "butterflies", and force them to live in a controlled containment, surrounded by a lushes actual garden. Here, we finally finds out what happens to a "butterfly", when they no longer serves their use. She's displayed in clear resin, with her back nearly against the glass, striped of her identity, arranged, displayed and groomed to his satisfaction.
