Whenever an assault happens, meta responds with comments about how users can use buttons to keep people away etc.
“The focus always seems to be on users finding and using tools to prevent abuse or reporting abuse when it does happen. Not on preventing abuse and taking serious action against abusers.”

“safety and functionality for women and minorities issued groups have never been a barrier to emerging technology. So we find ourselves yet again in a situation where incomplete and inadequate sticking-plaster solutions will continue to be proffered for problems that should never have been allowed to become systemic in the first place.”

Meta has not acknowledged or taken action to any of the assault reports.
“It’s not much good pointing to your complaints system as the solution to abuse when you don’t respond to complaints at all.”

… This is not impossible. But none of it is happening, because it simply isn’t a major priority for tech companies. And all of us will pay the price for their greed and their myopic, white-male vision of what the future could and should look like.”

“[The metaverse provides an opportunity to create a world where abuse and assault of women is not possible] But this would require concerted efforts, technological infrastructure and innovative execution, with equality and safety at the centre of all virtual planning and creation…

“Closing those spaces off from women, girls, and other minorities groups, because of the tolerance of various forms of prejudice and abuse, would be devastating” and over time as the metaverse plays a larger role in our life, just ‘taking our headset off’ will not be applicable.
Also, it is designed to give realistic sensory experiences to the user, providing real world physical and psychological harm.

Some people’s response to people getting assaulted in the metaverse is to just take the headset off.
But this excludes women from the space, and why should we have to be excluding from everything just to avoid assault? It’s another form of victim-blaming, where the ‘solution’ lies with our exclusion, not men’s behaviour.
These are my thoughts, will put book quote on next note

“Such comments [like people saying they get shot in Call of Duty and don’t think anything of it] are a particularly common response, which says a lot about our societal acceptance of abuse as simply an inevitable by-product of engaging in technology for women and girls – something we are simply urged to except and accept.”

Virtual online worlds are also frequently used to groom children, often leading to real-world interactions and abuse

[about people questioning whether virtual assault is as bad as real-word assault]
“It is a technique of deflection and minimisation in which our society is well versed and it boils down to this: shut up women, and be grateful it isn’t something worse.”
