I'm so boooooooooooored .
And frustrated. There really was a great 300 page book in here that Ellmann sacrificed for what feel like an unnecessary vanity project. The prose style though distinct and sharp, cannot sustain a 500 + page novel as the formula is extremely repetitive. At this point my friend & I are starting to see how she approaches a page and its so predictably bland. The lists have no flavor anymore

"the fact that the soldiers sent to kill the

which makes them sound like most American citizens now actually, the
fact that the Romanov children wouldn’t die at first and had to be stabbed
and shot some more, the fact that how can people bring themselves to do
these things, so much blood,"

I’d been so curious about this one because I’ve seen people describe it as hypnotic and brilliant, so reading your update genuinely surprised me a little. The idea that there’s an incredible 300-page novel buried inside a much longer, repetitive structure sounds both fascinating and frustrating at the same time. I still really want to experience Ellmann’s voice for myself someday, but your point about the prose losing its flavour over time definitely makes me more hesitant now.
