Session 4:
Part 4 - Also read this in two sittings. Watching the scenery from the train window while I read made me feel like I was almost living the first part. I read this part with a tired mind, so not many intelligent thoughts have formed yet, but as always, the language is like a balm and the story moves me so much. I love Gareth and I miss Da.

Session 3:
Part 3 - Lots to love here, Esme's curiosity/passion for understanding = unashamed of Mabel's words. The courage she finds with Tilda/Bill to expand her expectations for women in society - strengthening her conviction that women's words aren't adequately captured in published literature. The inarticulable emotions of pregnancy where her words fail her. The heartbreaking bluntness of the final sentence.

Session 2:
Part 2 - The way she evokes meaning/feeling without detail is masterful. Inferring the abuse at Cauldshields, her depression depicted as sleeping in/failing exams. The whole book is about words/how we interpret their meanings/giving value to certain words, but it's so visceral in the writing. The use of alone? So simple. Gareth. I love it. The realisation that unwritten words are less important is huge.

Session 1 notes:
Part 1: I absolutely love this book. Coming back to it feels like putting on an old, familiar pair of pajamas. I absolutely love the style and language the author uses, even when Esme is so young that she doesn't really know how to articulate certain things, the feeling and the meaning is there. With so little exposition, the characters and their history already feel fully fleshed and real.
