This was going alright (premise believability aside) until we hit the lengthy villain monologue infodump, an unrealistic romantic near-miss, and then a perfectly clear remembering of an event she’d entirely forgotten until plot convenient.

I keep getting pulled out of the story by how nonsensical it is to have a world where people aren’t supposed to create anything: inventions, innovations, new ideas, dreams… children??? Because each one creates an evil demon with creepy red eyes that prowls after innocents. I know it’s fantasy. But still. They couldn’t have carriages and their posh lifestyle without innovation.
