seems homoerotic. i suspect some of it scans better before translation. i’m having a little trouble with some of the language chosen to describe (alleged) fatness - i know it’s social commentary on womanhood and body image in japan, but to me it isn’t clear whether cliches like referring to kajii’s ‘fleshy back’ betray rika’s ingrained ideas about fatness or yuzuki’s, or in fact polly barton’s.
