“I sense I must gird myself to repel the worst of all tyrannies: the tyranny of the lover over one who cares not to be loved, with that weight of tenderness and humility that defuse violence and stifle words of reproach. In a battle like the one I am on the verge of inciting, there is no worse adversary than the person who takes all the blame and begs for forgiveness before being shown the door.”

“I'm not here to think. I ought not think. Above all, I should feel and see. And when seeing becomes watching, strange lights emerge and everything unites in one voice. In a flash, this has revealed to me the existence of a Dance of the trees. Not all of them know the secret of dancing in the wind. But those endowed with the grace to do so celebrate balls of foliage, branches, and shoots around their swaying trunks. The rhythm is born in the leaves, ascendant and apprehensive, stiffening and waving, with empty pauses, exhalations, rising and sagging, jubilation in sudden whirlwinds of a prodigious singing of green. Nothing is more lovely than the dance of a bamboo stand in the breeze. No human choreography has the eurythmy of a branch drawn across the sky. I ask myself at times if the higher forms of aesthetic emotion might consist of nothing more than a supreme understanding of creation. One day, men will find an alphabet in the eyes of the chalcedony, in the dun velvet of the phalaena, and will realize in astonishment that every spotted snail was always already a poem.”
