this book is so slow to start it took me a full week to even consider picking it back up

Immediately reminds me of "The Passengers" by John Marrs. Seemingly the same concept, only placed in the past (1950's) instead of the future. That's turning me off slightly, unfortunately :/

Admittedly, I'm also worried because the plot seems to involve world history and I'm for sure lacking in that department
