Using marriage as a way to have financial stability is horrible. The nordics barely get married and when they do, they got “daddy time off” which is a way for fathers to get off work and care for their child for 3 months! I would be so moved if my child cried and called for his father rather than his mother. What a great motivation to have fathers be more involved with raising their children.

Women are more likely to have managerial positions than Nordic women. Super moms tend to stop working; I’m shocked that Nordics aren’t so worried and are at ease with their child’s education.

Here we like to talk about keeping the nuclear family together but we don’t provide the means to support them. We depend on family and friends for a baby shower (another time for consumerism to strive) but wary of baby baskets from hospitals. How is that socialist ?

We Americans have it bad. Could be worst. We could not have free speech or late night Walmart. From my understanding it is true that we hate the government to interfere with our lives and it may sound socialist and weak to advocate for better social programs but cmon! We can def have a Walmart & free healthcare at the same time in this century. RIGHT?!!!!!

I feel the authors empathy in these pages. She’s showcasing the common conversations of everyday Americans with how they depend on employers for health care, what if the daycare price increases, marry a wealthy partner, will my job fire me for using my PTO. But she praises our freedom of individuality and our love for our families and friends

She made me realize that American parents do go crazy to get their children into college. The dependency (even when in the uni), to me seemed normal. But it’s not? Our parents give up their lives to get us thru at least high school. Ofc it varies but she also said prestige isn’t something they chase because they already have it (education, healthcare, wage, community support) HOLY HELL

First few pages and she described Americans as anxious sisu. Sisu a Finland word for grit. Ngl I do view Europeans as sissies. But, would u rather be a sissy and let your gov coddle you with 10 months parental leave or be a hard worker and get back in 2 weeks?*
*you gotta go back to work or less they don’t pay you. And you got bills to pay. Hence the anxiety diagnosis
