On to the last part.
I know I should give this novel some slack since it was written in 1999, but I can't stand Emma. She's the usual sci-fi character who acts like a surrogate for the readers: always clueless, asks questions, stands atop a moral pedestal, etc.
Using audience surrogates is an outdated—and frankly, intellectually insulting—writing style, imho.
