I feel like I've grown up with two competing narrative on WW1.
1) The Germans were just as much victims as the Entente nations. This mostly applies to the individual soldiers, but sometimes transcends to the nation as well.
2) The Germans were morally more abhorrent than the Entente and the consequences for their defeat was completely deserved.

I like reading the recap even though I just finished the first book in this trilogy, but I feel like it's important to mention that the Social Democrats had used the far-right FreeCorps (far-right according to Evans btw) in stopping the Communists - which resulted in the death of Rosa Luxembourg. It is this event that would constitute a huge part of why the KPD and SPD refused to work together later.
