Much like a presidency, I waited 100 pages before making an educated comment. Some people stare at a stereogram and see a sailboat. I stared at the first 100 pages and saw 683 more pages I was unwilling to subject myself to.

Not easy. First time I read it, it was a struggle. The next two times, I read the annotated edition and appreciated it much more. If I tried to read it now, I don't think I could.

Too many dated references for me to enjoy. I felt ignorant not knowing some obscure character from Irish history and that gave me a sense of unease I couldn't get past. A friend of mine, a voracious reader, said this was a challenge like Everest; just to say you did it.
