J. ~14% through The Reformation — Durant is laying the foundation carefully, showing that Luther didn’t ignite a bolt from nowhere; the ground had been drying for centuries. Corruption, political ambition, economic grievance, rising literacy, and sincere believers demanding reform were already setting the stage. Early impression: this feels less like “the story of Luther” and more like the story of how Europe became ready for Luther.
