I'll finish it tonight - its rating is going to go up. 13 year old me didn't have a clue. I originally read this entry in the series probably among the first 10 I read, if not the first 5. It spoiled a major event in Lady, Lady, I Did It!, which I read later. I latched onto this series as Ghosts came out in paperback - I read the old ones in random order, and anything past 1980 as they showed up in paperback.

I hoped this would happen: I’m reacting better to this book, with the re-read, than I did as a 13-14 year old, back in the early 1980s. Back then, I would have felt the detectives were not in it enough compared to the five or six from the series I had read before this one. I would have wanted a proper whodunit, not this story. I did not want organized-crime stuff, or gang stuff. This time, I’m open-minded, and happy.

I don’t normally feel inclined to re-read books I have given low ratings to…but a while ago I pulled from storage all the 87th Precinct novels from the 1970s, with intent to re-read them. The first surprise was that I don’t seem to own all of them, anymore. No recollection of divesting myself of Sadie When She Died, and a few others, but I can’t find them. Anyway, this one gets a second chance.
