Gogol’s 14th birthday reminded me of how mine and Shudhi’s birthdays used to be celebrated. The putting aside of gifts that Gogol didn’t like and saving them for his cousins in India when they go back and visit was so real. Felt called out when Lahiri called Gogol speaking to his parents in English lazy because that’s what it is. I wish Ashoke told Gogol about the train. I’m sure he will someday.

Enjoying the book a lot more now that Gogol is a bit older. Ashima and Ashoke remind me of my parents when we first moved to Australia. I’m realising how little I can remember from my childhood, and I don’t want to forget. This book feels really nostalgic though and I’m excited for it to unlock more memories.
