The way he writes about different people in the prison, the good and the ugly, the reasons for their behavior, it all seems so real. I am barely in the beginning of this book but the impact his words have had on me is moving. He depicts the convicts as good people too, recognizing their good hearts while also telling us about the monsters that are in there to provide contrast. Wow, he’s such a keen observer.
