Just finished Part 1. Sen’s father is crazy. He won’t be winning any Father of the Year awards anytime soon. Also, being crammed into boxes seems to be a recurring theme. The story continues to be interesting and I googled sword ferns. Is this gonna be a Sixth Sense thingie? The downsides are that I don’t like memory loss as a plot point and I don’t like Baker’s descriptions.

Despite all the talk of maggots and other gruesome imagery, this is more of a mystery with supernatural and horror elements, which suits me fine. Turns out reading this right after The Book Eaters was a good idea. Because the horror doesn’t come from the house and who may or not be a ghost, but from the damn parents. Both Sen and Lee have parents from hell. Especially Sen. Her father is demonic, probably literally.

I don’t read this sort of horror, but I’m supposed to be going outside my comfort zone. I like the setting as I been in Japan in the past. It’s definitely interesting and Lee’s not exactly reliable but I trust there’s something actually very wrong with the house and it’s not just his disturbed and drug-addled mind. The writing is a little strange; Baker tends to use bizarre similes that are distracting.
