This book can be difficult because so much of its length consists of long anecdotes into the lives of people connected to Ulises Lima and Arturo Belano. These anecdotes are often beautiful, and Bolaño takes the opportunity to show off how good he is at giving life and interiority to a side character that you will likely never see again, but they can be tiring too. The rhythm is somewhat difficult to keep up with.
