Possibly the best short story I’ve ever read, such a beautiful heart wrenching ending! Exquisite! Now to the next story….

Omg the language in this story is so beautiful. It is truly a work of art and such a joy to read! Loving it 🥰

“”Help,” he said, “is giving part of yourself to somebody who comes to accept it willingly and needs it badly.“ “So it is,” he said, using an old homelitic transition, “that we can seldom help anybody. Either we don’t know what part to give or we don’t like to give any part of ourselves. Then even more often than not, the part that is needed is not wanted.” Hmmmmm

“He tried to tell me. He spoke in the abstract, but he had spent his life fitting abstractions to listeners so that listeners would have no trouble fitting his abstractions to the particulars of their lives.”

“It was here that I started this story, although…I did not know that stories of life are more often like rivers than books…And I sensed that ahead I would meet something that would never erode so there would be a sharp turn, deep circles, a deposit, and quietness.”
I love Norman’s analogies, his understanding of geomorphology and the place a river has in its outcomes and formation…mmmmm
