The way this man spoke of himself at the beginning of the story, how he knew every house and person etc. but that they did not know him, made me legitimately wonder if he was an animal or something of that nature living on the street.
I genuinely thought the story might be being told from the perspective of a dog or a mouse... or some other non-human entity.
