This is classified as a middle grade novel, which surprises me. The story is over 400 pages and the text is quite sophisticated. As a teacher, I can’t imagine most middle graders having the attention span or the vocabulary cache to sustain their interest in this book, by Canadian author Caroline Pignat. I picked it up myself because of the setting, Ireland of 1913. I do also enjoy historical fiction.
