The head, Chef invites Danny to come with him as a joke but also to see if he takes the offer. Later before the Chef leaves, he invites Dan into his car and chat with him about their shared ability “the shine”

We explore Jack’s past as a teacher, which was ruined by his actions of assaulting a student. We also explore Wendy and her background with her mother being abusive and her fear of experiencing the same with Jack. Wendy thinks through the situation with her husband and realizes he is still cruel and abusive, even though he’s not an alcoholic anymore and ponder the question of divorce.

Danny displays his ability to read thoughts, foresee the future, and have visions. He senses his mother sphere of Jack and Jack’s anger and shame along with something dark at overlook. Tony, Danny’s imaginary friend, shows Danny, something bloody violent, and cruel, overlook related to the word redrum.

Watson the hotel’s maintenance worker, explains how the hotel functions to jack. Watson warns Jack the boiler must constantly be monitored.

Jack Torrance arrives for an interview at the overlook hotel. Jack is trying to become the caretaker in the winter for the hotel. He meet Stuart Oldman, who is interviewing him and described to him the past winter caretaker who killed his wife and children and went insane. Instead of scaring Jack, this makes him more motivated to take on the challenge.
