Still enjoyable though not revolutionary. I love how it explores Freddie’s dilemma of forgetting/escapism and his clinging still to his memories of Winter.

And Faland, the devilish…devil I guess, is an interesting addition and adds an element of fairytale-esque spookiness that doesn’t feel inconsistent with the world despite the magical elements.

It’s good. The blend of personalities and the desperate, hellish backdrop of war—the bleakness drawing out the little dignities and desires to escape.

Really good. Captures that desperation of war and camaraderie in Freddie’s portions. And Laura is a great “strong female character” as it makes sense—the emotional coldness from traumas and competence of being an army nurse; composed and yet occasionally thrown when a nerve is struck.

But yeah, it’s a war (really the aftermath of) story with the people first which is more emotionally human and affecting
