I had a dumb redhead moment when I bought NYPD Red 8 and didn't realize it was technically part of a series. That being said, not having read numbers 1-7 didn't really matter as this felt like a stand-alone book. There was a story within a story within another story - three intertwined situations that at few points had me wondering where things were going and how would it get tied up in a neat little bow at the end?
