PTSD is more apparent later in the book, manifesting as drunkenness in Mike, abandonment issues in Cohn, disloyalty in Brett, and anger in Bill. Very traumatized people trying to cope with their existence.

Hemingway’s narrative is nonchalant, the likes of which I’ve only seen in perhaps Catcher in the Rye. His descriptions of events transpiring is basic, but not in a way that seems amateur. Rather it comes across as though Hemingway is so skilled a writer that he can simplify his vocabulary to make the material seem even stronger. The simpler your wording, the more intelligent you sound.

I’m impressed by the quality of the storytelling with such simple language. This is my first time seeing Hemingway’s famous “iceberg” method and its effectiveness is immediately evident.
