It was a deliberate choice on Howard's part to depict mental health help and services/facilities as prisons for the incurably looney. In the Texas of Splintered's 2000s modern day America, the only place that offers a basic psychiatrist is the same horror movie asylum that drugged and abused Alyssa's mom. Howard... there are psychiatrists who have offices in shopping malls.

It’s impressive to write so much nothingness.

I'm baffled how Splintered and Unhinged manage to be so regressive in how mental illness, relationships, and bodily autonomy are depicted. We really have no good Alice's Adventures in Wonderland retelling considering Splintered is the top recommendation.
