This book is so upsetting. I guess I always thought that communism wasn’t that bad because it meant that everyone was equal but I had NO IDEA how corrupt it really is. Seeing families torn apart, people starved and killed, teens going to war, girls getting raped is all just too heavy to bear. I can’t believe people had to go through this.

So we were introduced to the family, the father is a police officer who used to be a monk—the main character is 5 years old and is navigating concepts of war and politics. It’s kind of boring, just learning about their lives, but I’m interested in seeing how it progresses
