Pericles deserves more blame for the failure of Athenian strategy than Thucydides gives him

Quoting another scholar: “Thucydides was such a remarkably objective historian that he himself has provided sufficient material for his own refutation. The news columns in Thucydides, so to speak, contradict the editorial Thucydides, and the editor himself does not always speak with the same voice.”
