Years ago I was fascinated by the Philo Vance books and even have three first editions. But when I revisited the stories in recent years, I didn't like them at all and thought he was just a pompous ass. I hope you enjoy them more than I did on second reading. I will say that the early films starring William Powell as Vance were very interesting as he downplayed Vance's personality.
