Here, Catherine is again the one to see the falsehood, to point out that she is still emotionally dependent on the attentions of men and unfullfilled. She seems sad. Without Viri the construct of home and family, her light is unfocused. Her brilliant smile harder to conjure.

Even as they explore relationships within and outside of their social circle, we accept them and continue to believe in the vision of their inviobility, their essential oneness. Only after Nedra splits with Viri do we start to see her as Catherine saw her, the vapidness of her sexual encounters, her self-awareness of her ability to manipulate, her belief in herself as a newly independent woman.

Early in the novel, "Peter admires the couple's (Viri and Nedra's) semi-bohemian lifestyle, but Catherine bluntly states about Nedra, "She's the most selfish woman on earth". At these early stages of Light Years, we are wrapped in the bubble of Viri and Nedra's hospitality, privy to their family life, their friendships and laguid gatherings, their status pairing easily with thier bonhomie.
