the setting is genuinely fantastic, well-built out and intriguing. makes it a shame that it's just a set piece for a copy-paste cliche romance. i'm half way through, i'll give the book grace but bad-boy with a heart of gold and sad childhood is a trope i have very little patience for. commit to the violence of your characters or don't go there at all. shahrzad also borderline mary sue.
