"I call it improper pride to let fool's notions hinder you from doing a good action. There's no sort of work,' said Caleb Garth, with fervour, putting out his hand and moving it up and down to mark his emphasis, 'that could ever be done well, if you minded what fools say. You must have it inside you that your plan is right, and that plan you must follow.'"

I never thought I'd cry because two of my favorite characters were fighting. There's a first time for everything I guess.

There's some pretty scandalous Last Wills in this book.

We form opinions about a character's personality within a few sentences of "meeting" them, but Eliot loves making us reevaluate these assumptions by getting us to sympathize with them (especially the jerky ones). It's one of the reasons why I'm loving this book!

I didn't want the 14th chapter to end. Out of all the characters I've met so far, I like Fred the most. He's so sweet to Mary

I loved this passage:
"We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale around the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, 'Oh, nothing!' Pride helps us; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our own hurts--not to hurt others."
