The prose is as elusive, slippery and slow as the main character - presumably an intentional style choice to mirror the Commissaire’s key characteristics and Danglard’s experience with him. However, more often than not, it feels repetitive and leans too heavily toward “telling rather than showing”, which undermines its intended effect. The plot itself is unoriginal and predictable.
