In university, undergraduates are trained to critique a source carefully and thoughtfully. They are taught to "show not tell". They are taught to analyse, not describe. This is an excellent book to show undergraduates in the Humanities how you should NOT discuss a source, and also how apparent seniority is patently no measure for how well you write/analyse. Highly recommended as a manual in Negative Demonstration.

I don't understand why undergraduates spend so much time learning how to read closely, think critically, and critique carefully if all you need to do as a "Senior Fellow at Singapore's Institute of Southeast Asian Studies" is rehearse and recite some statesman's speeches, almost verbatim in some cases. Occasionally, Ooi displays some faint glimmers of personal opinion when he describes Dr Goh as "brilliant"
