D-Day+2 finished. Easy company is at the base of Mt. Suribachi, and although it is the end of the day, the night brings terrors as well.

First day of the battle, pure chaos and carnage erupts after what is a false sense of hope as the landing is silent.

Finished the chapter armada, which goes into detail what both marines and Japanese defenders were doing leading up to D-Day at Iwo. Both sides “hand picked” the men that would lead their countries men in battle at Iwo. Kuribayashi was picked by the emperor and “howlin Mad” smith was chosen by Roosevelt.

Chapter 5 talks about the boys first coming together to form the 5th marines at Camp Pendleton in 1944 to camp Tarawa on the Big Island of Hawaii and the extensive training they were doing at both camps. Also goes into detail intimate interactions told from friends of the characters
