The arc of the narrator’s relationship with his partner being dissected in this work peaked in Ch 16 The Fear of Happiness, then appeared the fault lines in Ch 17 Contractions and now it’s in the decrescendo as I read through Ch 18 Romantic Terrorism. These last couple of chapters were quicker to go through with fewer allusions and philosophical deep dives pacing up the reading. Later third feels more novel-like.

Philosophical and deconstructive in approach, this book (supposedly a novel) puts the making and sustenance of a romantic relationship under microscopic examination — as much as it is introspective from the protagonist’s point of view, in turn it also takes the readers on a similar journey of trying to understand ‘love’ as an idea, a concept, a phenomenon — invoking experiences from present and past.
