When he gets into politics though I get the sense that he is trying to tell the story of how he went from liberal to conservative. His explanation of “conservative” values is also biased. As a liberal I feel like sanctity, respect of authority (different authority, for example science), and loyalty are important.

His disregard of oppressed people also irks me. He romanticizes some socio centric cultures where for example women’s rights are curtailed as “beautiful”. Thanks for that, man.
I would posit that it’s possible in an ideal society to value loyalty and order and sanctity etc without oppressing women. But people in power use those values as a rationalization for their oppression.

Picked this up because I want to understand the political divisions in this country. And more specifically I want to better understand conservatives. I’m about a third of the way through. It’s been fascinating so far— the idea that our moral judgments are mainly intuitive and followed up by rationalizations makes a lot of sense.
