Upon finishing part one: Dumas writes of adventure with deep fluency; of women, less so. The melodramatic romance is at once cartoonish and sincere—one character starts a major international war so his mistress won’t be humiliated. My interest in court intrigue over the scenes of combat leads me to believe that I’d enjoy Pride and Prejudice. I remain charmed by how fun of a read this is.
