I want to say, as an update: I just read the first chapter (or, really, the first short story in this collection of stories). It's titled "A Hedge of Croton," and it is incredible. I mean it. It's something like what I would call the perfect short story. I was so hooked, moved, engaged and enraged, and, at the end, perfectly satisfied by how Michener rounded it off. Wow.
