I started making a literary being of myself, someone who lives as if her experiences were to be written down someday.

‘I sincerely envy them. They have no idea that they have the best of everything now. It's stupid not to know when in our lives we'll be happiest.'

How strange and sweet is this retrospective consolation, when imagination arrives to soothe the pain of memory, to shatter the singularity and solitude of an experience that is more or less shared by others at about the same time.
