By changing the narrative structure half way through, it jars the reader (as the turn of events jars the main character) and it feels uncomfortable to read as we have been used to a first person narritive. With an author of this calibre i am sure its intentional. It also removes the priest from his stature, and having him "fall" into a more mortal life. Also mirrors christ and judas.
