I was thrilled when my Italian in-laws got me this book for Xmas: it'd been on my to-read list for ages, and I took the gift as a little sign of how well they know and accept me, despite linguistic and cultural differences. Having read the 1st chapter in which teacher & mother Olive's brittleness is set in stark contrast to her husband's gentleness, I now wonder if it was intended as a much less welcoming message
