I'm reading this one year to early. It plays in 2027. Russia in isolation, neo-feudal structures have been established. A circle of Opritschnikis are the selects of the Gossudar, a ruler of absolute power. They fulfil his will without asking and don't flinch from any brutality. The narrator Andrej Komjaga is one of them. In his view, he does god's work and doles out justice as it is deserved.

It's difficult to bear how those in power can do everything while all others are at the mercy of them. Public floggings and hangings of those fallen from grace including gang rapes of their wifes are the order of the day. Culture is only what the regime servants produce. Fortune telling, astrology and orthodox creed have widely replaced science. Unbelievable technological advances exist though, mostly from China.
