During the first battle of the war Joey's new rider, captain nicholls, is killed. Joey gets a new rider named Thomas Warren. He is kind to him as well but after one battle their entire infantry gets slaughterd. Joey,Topthorn,another horse, thomas andtophhorn's rider all get captured.Later Emilie a little girl and her grandfather take them in but soon enough they have to go to war again.

There is a horse who is taken away from his mother. He's bought out of revenge by a drunk man. He hates it there until he meets Albert. Albert cares for him and names him joey. They grow up together, until the war starts. Albert's father sells him because he needs money for the farm, without telling Albert. Joey slowly adjusts to his new rider's kind hands.
