"We'll see. He sounded like the adults who used to infuriate me as a child by using those very words when they were unable, or possibly unwilling, to commit themselves."

"At the risk of sounding like your mother - who, incidentally, is nobody's fool - I have to say it. You don't know Daniel. He is a true artist: impermanent, restless, impractical."

When was the last time you stringed beens in company/togetherness? When was the last time you made daisy chains? In Germany daisies are called Gänseblümchen. 🪿 🌼 "Geese flowers".

I remember stringing beans with my Granny and also peeling hulls to get peas - from her own garden. 🫛

"Go back to London. Get your life in perspective. Ring the nice young man who brought you dead chrysanthemums." 😂

"They weren't dead when he gave them to me."

(It was just a long train ride. I like Nigel. He gave her the flowers. Daniel is not reliable.)

"I left them. Let myself quietly out of the drawing room and shut the door and leaned against it, like people do in films."

Phoebe's clock chimed a single, silvery note. One o'clock (AM). I laid down my coffee mug [...]. Still not sleepy [...].

Ebba: You just had a cup of coffee, Prue. Of course, you are not sleepy yet.

"A scrap of poetry, half learned, half forgotten, flew like a ghost through the back of my mind.

Oh, love, we two shall go no more to lands of summer beyond the seas."

"It's a very cheerful picture. And that's odd, because I don't think she's a particularly cheerful child."
"I know," said Daniel. "It's reassuring."
I put the drawing on the mantelpiece, propped against Pheobe's clock.

"We've been drawing."
"I don't suppose you even noticed the rain."
"No, not really. My paper was beginning to get a bit wet, but then a man came and held the umbrella over it and I could finish."
"His name is Daniel."

"The table was laid, the drop scones made, and the kettle boiling, and still they had not returned."

Julie G Woot-woot! I haven't read this one yet.

Ebba Simone It was published in 1982. I like its slow pace and gentleness and that it is situated in a village by the sea. There was a train ride in the beginning which I also liked. This is my very first Pilcher.

Julie G I am looking forward to reading it. I'm glad I saved a couple for the future! (Keep in mind, though, that some of her smaller novels from the 70s and 80s are less impressive than her 4 big epics. I find them all rather relaxing, but she does shine it on with her bigger, later books).
