Everyone in this book is quite sadistic. But it is to be expected in this setting. That’s humanity for you. Some of the punishments and how they are graphically portrayed make my skin crawl reading it. Who actually killed that Minor Saint? Or did someone really did it? I wouldn’t put it past the Superior Sister to have taken the sacred crystal and blamed it all on poor Mariel just to torture and burn her alive

Circe is a cat…I don’t want to know what happened to her anymore. I feel sick. How much pain can the narrator take? Please stop this. Is Lucía a witch? Is she? How can you explain the things that she can do? At first, I thought she was a very clever manipulator but it really seems like she isn’t. Is she Helena reincarnated? Or maybe her soul, back for vengeance? There are a lot of weird similarities hmm

The narrator’s relationship with her mother and the love for books and literature that she’s got from her makes want to scream. I wonder how old she is. My guess is in her twenties, probably early twenties. And oh boy do I want to know what happened with Circe? I feel sick every time I remember what happened to Helena. What the hell is wrong with the Superior Sister? And what did she do to the narrator?

The memories of the narrator’s mother coming back with the taste of coffee was a smart choice. I felt sick. At the memories of her mother and then her time with the tarantula kids. I’m also glad that we got a bit more information about the great catastrophe, the animals going around in circles without stopping creeped me out. I’ve seen videos of them doing that a while ago and it is very troubling to see.

That wanderer will totally come in and interrupt the funeral won’t she? And they might see it as a good sign and they will totally consider her as a candidate for the Chosen or the Enlightened. So they do speak in Latin, interesting! Desastrum is such a beautiful word (for a language/linguistics nerd such as myself) des/dis prefix meaning I’ll, apart, and astrum meaning star basically ill-starred, so cool!)

They really did bury Helena alive…that’s crazy. The narrator killed the Minor Saint didn’t she? She totally did it. This is insane. Poor Mariel. But what was she trying tell the narrator when she was delirious off that amanita that the narrator gave her? The Enlightened are what? None? Do they kill them off? I know something really sinister happens behind that black door but I’m not sure what it is.

I would never come willingly to that place. But I want to know how bad it is outside. But regardless, I’ll take my chances out there, thank you very much. It also reminds me a bit of Blasphemous. Which is cool too.

Mariel was praying in French, which is very interesting! I wonder where this book takes place. If it’s set in Argentina then Mariel really is a long way from home. I wonder what language they use in the House of the Sacred Sisterhood. My guess is that it’s Latin but who knows. Maybe it’s even a made up language. The punishments and rewards (for that matter) are very brutal!

It reminds me a lot of The Handmaid’s Tale though I didn’t read the book only watched the show but it’s very similar in that both are set in (sort of) post-apocalyptic world with different causes, & the protagonist/narrator is in an insane cult and has to survive by all means. Both the narrator here and June Osborne do dangerous things (writing vs reading etc.) but this is a lot more brutal, physically at least

So, the narrator was the reason or part of the reason why Helena died I take it. She said she’d found her writings and she had to get rid of the evidence. Did they bury her alive? It sure sounds like it. Reading the part after, where the narrator went back to the grave and dug up, while crying for forgiveness left me breathless. The imagery is very strong in this book and I really, really like it so far.
