The first chapter had been more interesting and suspenseful than the rest of the book. The detached protagonist seems to be a convenience for Szalay's lazy approach to storytelling. What would be interesting parts are simply skipped over and we hear about them later, like he couldn't be bothered to "flesh" out the story. I'll still finish it, I guess. So far it's Barry Lyndon but cold modern Europe and no charm.
