The first story uses a lot of the same ideas that Frankenstein does - the idea of a scientist "playing God" by altering human life in some drastic way, a secondary character being a woman who was orphaned as a child, and a protagonist who is doomed by the narrative, trying to run from the problems they created. If this had been novel-length, I could see it being as famous as Frankenstein.
