Reading a novel that is a fictional account of human evolution (how's that for irony?) has been interesting (if a bit technical) so far. One cannot help but chuckle at the absurdity at times (Baxter, by his own confession, goes rogue occasionally: I've enjoyed the spear-wielding dinosaurs and the sky whales most), but this line is rich with meaning:

"[T]he sun continued its purposeless dance around the sky."
